Was Steve Jobs an Asshole?
Two of our most recent podcast, one on Innovation Leadership and one on Leading Organizational Agility have both highlighted the criticality of leadership in setting culture.
Culture isn’t a nebulous thing. It can be designed. Attributes of organization that make them innovative or agile are known, and they can be built in.
That idea reminded me of this clip of Tony Fadell (lead engineer for the iPod) discussions Steve Job’s leadership style.
Ignore the title, Steve Jobs wasn’t an asshole. But the subtle distinction between the myth of Jobs and his actual style is worth listening to to understand why he was so brilliant at setting cultural norms when he was CEO of Apple.
Here were some of my takeaways:
🏔️ Be about the mission, not your ego.
💡 Acknowledge great ideas.
🙋♀️ Always be challengable.
📸 Framing the vision correctly is crucial.
🤷♂️ Be humble. Say I’m sorry.
🙏🏼 Be an example of the culture you’re striving for.
📊 Critique the work; never the person.
